Pardon the interruption, the regular scheduled post about my diabetes and me has been postponed, instead I would like to talk about the few good books and one rather bad book I’ve been reading lately.
1. “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones”: I liked this book, I like vampires, werewolves, and found that I really like shadow hunters also. The book managed to keep my attention and didn’t let me down, lots of action, adventure, and a bit of teen angst. It was no surprise to me when a few days later I picked up:
2. “The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes”: Pretty much an instant replay as far as action, adventure, and teen angst goes, I managed to finish it in a few days, planned on picking up “City of Glass”, but thought about the stack of books my mom sent with the clothes the other day.
3. “Between Shades of Gray” by Ruta Sepetys: Because this book came with the 3 book set of “Gray” books my mom had also sent, I left it on the floor as a dust collector for the better part of a month. I had no desire to read the “Gray” books, and I assumed that because she gave me this book with the others that it was some sort of accompaniment to the others and well, that assumption made me an ass big time. This book was one of the best books I’ve read. The story follows a 15 year old Lithuanian girl, her mother, and younger brother as they are rooted from their homes and essentially forced into slavery back in 1941. This book made me see that even on a bad day, I should count my blessings because it could be worse.
4. “Fifty Shades of Gray”: This one started off pretty good. I had heard from family and friends that it is the best book since well, any book, there is no book this good, “You will love it” they said. Maybe it was 87 pages into the book and I decided I do not like this book. I do not like the way it looks, I do not like Christian Gray, I do not care how hot or wealthy he may be, he is a fruit loop plain as day.
Eighty-seven pages in and now I am left wondering if I will ever be able to look the rave reviewers of this book in the eyes without bursting into a fit of giggles. Seriously. If any of you dear readers have read this book, I’m sorry.
Maybe I should tell you that I don’t like romance novels to begin with. I like Jack Reacher, Alex Cross, Alex Delaware, Tyrion Lannister, Odd Thomas, but Christian Gray? Seriously?
I was pretty firm in my intentions to not read the book, well until I finished “Between Shades of Gray” and did not have the opportunity to go get a new book. I must tell you that I did think it had to be ok to have so many good reviews, I have no TV shows for at least a couple of weeks, so using my what’s the worst that could happen, I started reading it. The worst actually happened and the book is still outside on the porch.
I feel really bad that I left a book outdoors in the elements. I love books, books are like little movies in my head. I’d take a good book over a TV show any day of the week. I am particular with my books in that I like the pages to be clean, actual sheets of paper with typed words, I enjoy the whiff of booky smell as I turn the pages.
In chapter two, there were day glo orange fingerprints on the page. I’m thinking mom had a bag of cheetos with that chapter and well, that should have been my sign. While I can’t un-read what I read thus far, I have ample time today to get a new book.
Thanks for sharing! I love to read as well, and while I don’t mind a LITTLE bit of romance, I tend to avoid the average romance novel. They are just too annoying. I did, however read the first 50 Shades book, thinking it might spice things up a little bit. I was actually bored with the book even though I finished it. I have no interest in reading any further, and I definitely don’t want to see the movie they are making of the book!
I’m thinking I definitely don’t want any Gray Spice lol. I enjoy Nicolas Sparks and Audrey Niffennegger for a little romance now and then, but tend to stay out of the romance section. I agree on the movie, I don’t want to see it. I really hope men don’t see it either because most of them are bad enough with out getting any new ideas!! Have a great day π
If you are up for some historical fiction, Molokai is an excellent book. I usually like sci-fi/fantasy/adventure/romance myself, but this one just moved me (and was educational!) http://www.amazon.com/Molokai-Alan-Brennert/dp/0312304358
Oh, that looks good, sounds good too. I enjoy historical fiction from time to time. I think I will like that one! Thanks for the link π Have a great day!
Ted Bell, Lincoln and Child, and David Baldacci…try them. I love reading, too. Just never enough time any more except for a few pages every night.
Ha! I knew we had more in common than just fighting diabetes π Back in July, for my birthday, my sister gave me “Relic”, “Reliquary”, and “The Cabinet of Curiosities”. Since I enjoyed them so much, I will check for some a Ted Bell or David Baldacci in the near future π
Books are wonderful and my primary source of entertainment!
Ted Bell is kind of adventure/thriller with a great back story. Baldacci is intrigue and conspiracy. There is a world outside of Diabetes! Really. Kathy writes book reviews on current and classics. The reviews are well written and entertaining. Worth it to just read the reviews. http://grownupbookreports.wordpress.com/
Thanks,
Phil
I agree, well written and entertaining, I’m a follower already π
HAHA — I am so guilty of having grease spots or chocolate spots all over pages in my books. I LOVE curling up with a book and snack, it’s one of my favorites
I’m a loon, coffee or chai latte and a book, yes. Sometimes I get that snacky feeling while reading, so I take a break. Have a great day π
With you there, absolutely ZERO desire to read 50 Shades of Grey series, especially because it started as a Twilight FanFic, just can’t place Bella & Edward into those roles, nevermind the flatness of Christian’s character that never gets fleshed out.
I adore Stephanie Meyer!!! Loved the Twilight series, and “The Host”. Since for the most part, I don’t enjoy books turned into movies (with the exception of “A Song of Ice and Fire” becoming “Game of Thrones” on HBO), so I’ve not seen the movies.
I guess I had to find out what all the hype was about with Christian Gray, only I found out that it really was just hype. Flatness of character, yep, that about sums it up, until one finds that he’s not only flat, he’s also twisted and flattened again!! Have a great day π
Love to read but sadly neglected because kids always interrupt (not a bad thing). I don’t like to be interrupted when I read a fiction book. So haven’t read any of those. Interesting to hear your comments. I’ll take your word!
It really started off ok, right before the downward spiral lol. I forgot to mention that I did read “Alex Cross, Run” between “City of Ashes” and “Between Shades of Gray”. James Patterson, Jonathan Kellerman, and Lee Child have never disappointed me as far as a good book goes, well, Lee let me down with the whole casting of the movie that I can not watch because Tom Cruise is not even half of Jack Reacher (ok, I’m biased, I’m not a Cruise fan, I like Penelope, but Tom? No way!) I was feeling a bit silly today and needed to get it off my chest. I’m pretty sure that a good book will cure what ails me!
As for the interruptions, my middle granddaughter interrupted my reading on Saturday. She brought me a stack of 4 books, a set about penguins and shapes and opposites, etc. Since the others were busy playing, she and I sat on the porch reading the penguin books aloud and she was smiling so big. I only hope that she continues to enjoy books because I enjoy reading to a captive audience, even if it’s just an audience of one. Have a great day π
